  Job opportunities with Guardian

Experienced Electronic Design/Development Project Engineer

Guardian is a small but rapidly expanding business with an international client-base offers perhaps a challenging and fascinating position in Wales for the electronic design and development of specialist, low volume, precision downhole electro-mechanical instrumentation for the worldwide oil and gas industry.  Guardian is located in a brand new, purpose-built facility close to the bustling capital city of Cardiff, and is a short drive from the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian mountains and the delightful Heritage Coast.

Operating within a small but growing design group which encourages individual initiative and an entrepreneurial outlook, the appointee will contribute significantly to the success of new product development by playing an active part in all elements of the product development cycle, from generation of design specifications through to prototype assembly and testing.  The successful candidate will relish the challenge and responsibility of meeting or exceeding client expectations.

Reporting to the Technical Director, the role offers significant autonomy for innovative design of new products, and would suit a free-thinking individual not constrained by the conventional.  The position offers a unique blend of conceptual and detailed design, analysis and practical engineering.

Ideal Candidate

Graduate-level electronics engineer with experience in both the analogue and digital fields, sensors, high-temperature design (200°C), firmware development (PIC, Actel, FPGA) who is able to drive the design process from concept creation to pre-production prototype build and beyond.  The successful candidate will adopt naturally a hands-on, ‘make-it-happen’ approach, so desk jockeys need not apply!  The ability to provide technical support to both our clients and our manufacturing operations is essential.

PCB layout skills will be a distinct advantage (Easy PC ideal).  Experience in any of the following areas would be of interest – low-noise/sensing electronics, SMPSU, telemetry & control, DSP.

Consistency, attention to detail, good communication and documentation / technical authorship skills are required.  Exceptional problem-solving skills are a prerequisite.

Project engineering / management skills with a history of working on / bringing in projects to time and to budget would be advantageous.

Enthusiastic, organised and self motivated with minimum of 5 years experience of detail design, build and prototyping of electronic products.

Familiarity with oil-field / aerospace / medical environments is an advantage but not essential.

A commitment to Quality and excellence in customer service and an appreciation of the concepts of continuous improvement are fundamental.

The ability and personality to fit into and work as part of a close-knit team is vital.

This is a unique opportunity to create your own success in a business with highly ambitious plans for growth.
